Genetic hair loss is typically inherited from one or both parents and often begins gradually. In women, this usually presents as a widening part, overall thinning across the top of the scalp, and reduced volume, rather than complete bald patches.
The condition is driven by a sensitivity to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone derived from testosterone. DHT binds to hair follicles and causes them to shrink (miniaturise) over time, leading to progressively finer, weaker hair that falls out more easily and regrows less effectively.
